Expert reports and certifications

# A document that holds up against whoever challenges it.

Four kinds of work, plus the appointment that comes from a court. Each one ends with a signed document, and the signature of a chartered engineer carries responsibility for what it says.

## When the job needs a signature, not an opinion.

Work reserved to a chartered engineer. Issued in the name of Ing. Massimiliano Brasile, Register of Engineers of Rome, section A, number 24157, with the professional liability that follows.

-

Technical IT certificationsigned report, usable for grant reporting and public calls

-

Digital forensic reportacquisition, analysis and report for legal or insurance proceedings

-

Party appointed technical expertsupport during litigation, observations on the court expert's report

-

Technical valuationsa reasoned valuation document

-

Court appointed technical expertappointment from the court, at the rate the judge sets

## Technical IT certification

Needed when a public body or a call for funding requires a qualified engineer to attest how a system is built, what was delivered and with which features.

What you get

a signed report, with the verification method and the collected evidence attached

## Digital forensic report

Needed when a piece of data has to hold up in court: a breach, an employee leaving with the files, a disputed email, a drive to examine.

What you get

an acquired copy with its chain of custody, a repeatable analysis, a signed report with conclusions and limits

## Party appointed technical expert

Needed when the case is already open and the court has appointed its own expert, or when the lawyer needs to understand the technical side before shaping the defence.

What you get

attendance at the expert's operations, written observations, notes for the lawyer

## Technical valuations

Needed when a value has to be put on a system, on software or on damage, and that number has to be defensible.

What you get

a valuation document with the method used, the input data and the calculation

## Court appointed technical expert

The appointment comes from the judge, not from the parties. There is no client here and no quote.

What you get

an answer to the questions the judge set, within the deadlines given

## How an engagement runs

- It starts from a written question. A vague question makes a vague report, so it gets written down first.
- We agree what the work needs: access to the systems, documents, the people to talk to, and who is answerable for the authorisations.
- The quote is a fixed price and accounts for the effort and the liability. Long engagements run with a payment upfront.
- The draft gets read together before signing. After signing the document does not change: if something is needed, an addendum gets written with its own date.

## What does not happen

- signing a report written by somebody else
- certifying facts that were not verified first hand
- writing the conclusions the client already has in mind
- giving legal advice, which is the lawyer's job
